Smartd sends no mail

Matthias Becher
Hi,

I want smartd regularly sends a mail to root. So I have configured
smartd.conf with " /dev/sda -d ata -H -m root -M test ".

After restarting with "rcsmartd restart" root should get a test-mail, but
nothing happens. In /var/lib/messages I read:

smartmontools.sourceforge.net
Apr 28 21:27:56 linux-paid smartd[4554]: Opened configuration file
/etc/smartd.conf
Apr 28 21:27:56 linux-paid smartd[4554]: Configuration file /etc/smartd.conf
parsed.
Apr 28 21:27:56 linux-paid smartd[4554]: Device: /dev/sda, opened
Apr 28 21:27:56 linux-paid smartd[4554]: Device: /dev/sda, found in smartd
database.
Apr 28 21:27:56 linux-paid smartd[4554]: Device: /dev/sda, is SMART capable.
Adding to "monitor" list.
Apr 28 21:27:56 linux-paid smartd[4554]: Device: /dev/sda, state read from
/var/lib/smartmontools/smartd.ST340014AS-5MQ3ZVAV.ata.state
Apr 28 21:27:56 linux-paid smartd[4554]: Monitoring 1 ATA and 0 SCSI devices
Apr 28 21:27:56 linux-paid smartd[4554]: Device: /dev/sda, state written to
/var/lib/smartmontools/smartd.ST340014AS-5MQ3ZVAV.ata.state
Apr 28 21:27:56 linux-paid smartd[4556]: smartd has fork()ed into background
mode. New PID=4556.

In /var/log/mail there is no information about any mail-traffic.

Postfix is running without problems, I can send a mail with "mail" to root
without problems!

What is wrong?

That is an undesired side effect of the new '-s, --savestates' option.
The .state file also stores the internal info about the warning mails.
This makes sense for '-M daily' and '-M diminishing'. For '-M test' and
'-M once', mails are suppressed forever.

This is now fixed in CVS for the '-M test' case.
(The meaning of '-M once' requires some further discussion :-)

Thanks for the bug report.

Cheers,
    Christian
